Amphicar and Wooden Boat fever in Tavares Florida

March 2015: in Tavares Florida for the annual Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival.

The show was not limited to basic boats, however. Several hybrid vehicles turned up as well, including planes that think they are boats. Tavares bills itself as the Seaplane City and indeed, we were able to see several seaplanes land and take off during this gala 3 day event.

These are not huge planes, but for those brave soles who ride in them and ride in them, the size is probably just right. For this writer, observing them is adequate adventure.

Cars also had trouble deciding if they were supposed to travel on land or water. Here the first of 17 amphicars makes it up the ramp.

A nice lineup of Amphicars. Amphicars were produced in Germany from 1961-1965 and
feature English Triumph 4 cylinder engines. As the name implies, they were designed to travel on both land and water. About 4000 were produced and not many survive today. They have become a hot collector item whose owners meet regularly at 'swim-ins' where they not only have a lot of fun, they also serve as entertainment for those watching from the shore.

Of course rare vintage wooden boats were on display...

Vintage Gar Wood.

Anything nautical could be found in the tents surrounding the show.

Clever nautical theme bar was a big hit.

Author Lisa Anders displays her aqua romance novel 'Love at the Lake'.

Restoration services advertised their wares

Nice wooden models in original boxes. If you had to ask how much, you can't afford them.

Lots of vintage outboard motors.  This was the belle of the ball at $2250.

But plenty to choose from.
 Glacier Girl
The rare finned Cobra. Several of these gems were on display
Some folks even brought their vintage woody vehicles. This Ford may been the best.

We had an opportunity after the show to visit  Gator Amphicar where Dave (Dave the Wave) Derer restores his amphicars.
