Harbert Michigan

Harbert Antique Mall (southwest Michigan near New Buffalo)

This is always one of our favorite spots. Huge inside with lots of stuff outside as well.

These shelves caught my eye. A little pricey.

The Volvo man. This guy is on Red Arrow Highway on the way to Michigan City from New Buffalo. I think the citry finally got him to get rid of some of his Volvo's. I remember a lot more. He seems to be down to about a dozen.

This place was closed,  but has some potential. At least there is a globe in the window, which always catches my eye.

Sawyer Michigan Rendezvous

Before heading to Three Oaks, we stopped at Sawyer Antique Mall just north of Harbert. This is one we hadn’t checked in a while.

Very impressed by the sheer size and scope of its offerings. In addition to several main levels, it has a bargain basement and an attic devoted to books, records and movies.

We did pick up a couple of 45’s including this Johnny Burnett E.P and an unusual John Fred and His Playboy Band item. 'Judy In Disguise' was his big hit. 'We Played Games' b/w 'Lonely Are the Lonely' are a little more obscure.

I also spotted a reasonably priced metal doll house which I decided I would purchase if the guitar case didn’t work out.

I am writing this in a lodging where I have no internet connection combined with a  weak Sprint cell phone signal. I am getting a taste of what solitary confinement would feel like. I won’t be able to update this blog until I get decent internet. I did find a hotspot earlier, but my phone ran out of juice and I was unable to transfer my pictures.

Going forward, I am going to plug this loophole and make sure I always have internet, even if it means dragging around a 200-mile cable…. unless I do actually find myself in true solitary confinement, in which case I will at least inquire as to the possibility of getting a wifi connection since it never hurts to ask.

Three Oaks Trilogy

Three Oaks - August 18 2014 – we had a nice visit to Trilogy, and engaged in some commerce with Brandon Nelson, the owner. I had seen the vintage coffin style guitar case at Ipso Facto, his other store, during a previous visit. Later, it occurred to me that this was the case I needed for my ancient Pond Firth parlor guitar, which  I had acquired a few years ago at a Hinsdale estate sale.

The case is old and the correct style for my guitar. It's not in perfect condition (which I wouldn't want anyway ) but it is the only one like this I have ever seen.

Brandon Nelson’s shops abound in the unusual to the outright bizarre items. He and his partners truly have the collectors eye and I suspect they may reside on the ‘severe’ point of the collector spectrum. Trilogy sits in the space previously occupied for years by the legendary Springdale Mid Century modern furniture shop, featuring highly desirable Heywood Wakefield chairs and tables and related accoutrements.

This is an example of the kind of thing you can find at Trilogy:

I don't know what they are but they are the kind of thing I like to find in an alley or out on the parkway on Monday morning.

Down the street from Trilogy is a relatively new shop called reFIND. This is a smaller yet well equipped store which also boasts an art gallery (Art Defense). It was not clear to us if the paintings were for sale, but I liked  that the artist minimalist style and his color palette was suited to our new addition. Unfortunately our budget had been reduced dramatically by the guitar case purchase, so the art purchase would have to wait regardless.

The evolution of Three Oaks into an art and antique destination seems to be accelerating. We find new points of interest every time we venture there. Today we found, in the ‘alley’ near the Acorn Theater, a new spot next to an auto repair garage, that features some interesting industrial art. We happened upon the owner David Cornett, who proudly showed us the bathroom he crafted from corrugated steel. More details will follow in a later episode of The Moderate to Severe collector.

Dating a License Plate and Other Perversions

How do I tell what year this license plate is from?

And another thing I need to figure out is how to rotate pictures. This went from my phone to the cloud to my Windows PC. In the process it got rotated.

The good news is the transfer from phone to my PC was almost instant.

The Altered Nixon Tapes

Never heard of this record. One rule is : if you've never seen it before and its cheap, buy it.
Also, we have an early Coasters record on the old style Atco label. Note that it is a Lieber Stoller song. Lieber and Stoller, of course, wrote most of the Coaster's hits.

Double Teardown in Hinsdale!

Double Teardown in Hinsdale!

This deviates a little from the spirit of this blog, except we do check out the demo sales. Sometimes they have interesting things - usually they are a little older than this so you can find some vintage accoutrements.

Actually they appear to be combining 2 houses. The southern house is being emptied and partially gutted. The one to the north is reduced to a shell.
Someone is buying the pavers. Great way to buy pavers if you have the vehicle and the muscle to deal with them.
Kitchen is being ripped out. Nice Viking refrigerator

The builtin Smith & Hawkens gardening workshop is cool. All the tools have their own little nook. Of course, they are in mint, unused condition.

Decent start for an outdoor kitchen

Tray Bien

Tray Bien

Downers Grove 8/15 Nifty house on a huge lot with 2 garages, 1 a giant 5 car barn.

I like these trays. I have 2 of these that were given to me. Different pictures with nice tropical themes.
These are the first I've come across at a sale. Both have the same picture, just different size.

Midcentury modern is not for everybody but if you dig it you dig it

Nothing like a nice 50's sectional still in the plastic

Should have grabbed the lamp

I see potential in these consoles with turntable and radio.

At one time these were expensive and highly desirable. Now you have trouble giving them away!

WLS Silver Dollar Surveys

WLS Silver Dollar Surveys

The earliest WLS Silver Dollar Survey in my collection.
November 12, 1960
Johhny Tillotson at #1
Dion, still active today, #12
I just realized my lousy picture cuts off the bottom: a promotion for the  Dick Biondi show with a nice pic of a young Biondi

I believe this may be the best possible way to store WLS Surveys.
This is the Webway Web023 'Perfect' Photo Album
Uses the FW-333 sheets.
