Three Oaks - August 18 2014 – we had a nice visit to Trilogy,
and engaged in some commerce with Brandon Nelson, the owner. I had seen the vintage coffin
style guitar case at Ipso Facto, his other store, during a previous visit. Later,
it occurred to me that this was the case I needed for my ancient Pond Firth
parlor guitar, which I had acquired a
few years ago at a Hinsdale estate sale.
The case is old and the correct style for my guitar. It's not in perfect condition (which I wouldn't want anyway ) but it is the only one like this I have ever seen.
Brandon Nelson’s
shops abound in the unusual to the outright bizarre items. He and his partners
truly have the collectors eye and I suspect they may reside on the ‘severe’
point of the collector spectrum. Trilogy sits in the space previously occupied
for years by the legendary Springdale Mid Century modern furniture shop,
featuring highly desirable Heywood Wakefield chairs and tables and related
accoutrements.
This is an example of the kind of thing you can find at Trilogy:
I don't know what they are but they are the kind of thing I like to find in an alley or out on the parkway on Monday morning.
Down the street from Trilogy is a
relatively new shop called reFIND. This is a smaller yet well equipped store
which also boasts an art gallery (Art Defense). It was not clear to us if the paintings were
for sale, but I liked that the artist
minimalist style and his color palette was suited to our new addition. Unfortunately
our budget had been reduced dramatically by the guitar case purchase, so the
art purchase would have to wait regardless.
The evolution of Three Oaks into an
art and antique destination seems to be accelerating. We find new
points of interest every time we venture there. Today we found, in the ‘alley’
near the Acorn Theater, a new spot next to an auto repair garage, that features
some interesting industrial art. We happened upon the owner David Cornett, who proudly showed us the bathroom he crafted from corrugated
steel. More details will follow in a later episode of The Moderate to Severe
collector.
